<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S7h9i-YrTRI/AAAAAAAABJ0/LdkDLmVfdnM/s400/Ganden-Samye-Dag+3+the+handsome+three.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456248988374879506" />Uniek Tibet

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S7iJXWm_PgI/AAAAAAAABKc/--Jn5s-3gOs/s320/Uitzicht+op+Rongpy+Monastery+en+Mt+Everest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456261982858460674" /> Bijna naar huis

Why are we travelling? Because, to know yourself and to decide between what's your choice and what's simply handed to you by tradition, you have to see what choices and traditions others have, as a contrast.

Namaste, Tashi Delek, Ni Hou, Salam, Good bye, tot ziens!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 322px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S7h3Bag3F4I/AAAAAAAABJs/juy4XA-1o0M/s400/fokke+sukke.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456241814740080514" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S6TmWk_HEOI/AAAAAAAABJk/bUCRGcLBDW4/s400/IMG_0050.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450734724585033954" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 225px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S6Tlf4haJfI/AAAAAAAABJU/72AjTX7CPWw/s400/IMG_9911.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450733784936359410" />

WOW!! We zijn er!! Hij was net zo blij als wij.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S6TlpdqZgGI/AAAAAAAABJc/y3785KU6eXQ/s400/IMG_9768.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450733949525000290" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 291px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S4uZ5a8PzeI/AAAAAAAABJM/vd1o_6AFnFw/s400/ChengduMap.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443613786370985442" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S3PDYt7kxqI/AAAAAAAABIg/vZ5rakUM3LI/s200/Zonnen+in+toeristisch+Candidasa,+Bali.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436904004580066978" />

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S3PEIKAxgsI/AAAAAAAABIo/HyAn0W9AVbw/s200/Kijk,+zo+doe+je+dat,+relaxen.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436904819571917506" />Horen, zien en...
Bali....is prachtig, is druk, is veel. Taxi! Maybe tomorrow? Or dinner? Massage?) maken de ervaring compleet, bedwelmend.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 112px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S3PFTNa6yiI/AAAAAAAABIw/LrguzlNVzrw/s200/Pim+en+Jantine+jan-feb+%2710+uitzicht+londo.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436906108977072674" />
Tjillen dus!
“If not now, maybe in a next life” is een veelgehoorde uitspraak hier.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 112px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S1fCusRHKxI/AAAAAAAABHY/psSmBfZKw5I/s200/Abel+Tasman+Park+-+Geen+goud+gevonden+daar+bij+Golden+Bay.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429021983231126290" />
Zuidereiland
Waar waren we gebleven?
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 112px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S1fB-RaNDAI/AAAAAAAABHQ/v2pYZ2PEp-o/s200/Mt+Cook+-+de+vetste+camping.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429021151387782146" />
Back to basics
Wel zonder wc of stromend water, maar ach, we waren toch back to basics?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 112px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/S1fEoo-SkeI/AAAAAAAABHg/vS1kaOQM6Hw/s200/Doubtful+Sound.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429024078290915810" />

Superstart at Frisco, NZ here we come!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/SzmdNpobpEI/AAAAAAAABCo/QIRNS0hU6T0/s200/NZ-Welkom+in+Auckland!+(Medium).JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420536484356400194" /> Hi allemaal, we zijn inmiddels in Nieuw Zeeland; heerlijk hier!

We spend some days in Frisco....
Zoals jullie weten begon onze tour in San Fransisco.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 112px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qoUVjl_cJKM/SzmcnZWkNqI/AAAAAAAABCg/WcJRrb1cUi4/s200/Frisco-Wil+je+een+Foto+maken+van+de+Bay+Bridge+heb+je+last+van+narcistische+meeuwen+(Medium).JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420535827151468194" />

www.elcomercioperu.com.pe

Maccu Picchu es maravilloso

....Maccu Picchu, Sunday 27th of January. I was glad to arrive there, for I told you already I had been sick. I actually wasn´t good the whole day before as well as the night. But in a miraculous way, I got better. Or maybe it was the Maccu Picchu itself that made me better. They say it always was a spiritual place. When the Inca´s in 1450 AD build there highly developed empire here, they lived in perfect balance with nature and heaven, (the) God(s), spirits, however you want to call it. And still this symbol of Inca culture is a place that gives many people inspiration and enthusiasm, which literally means ´into God´. Which meant they had lots of time for spiritual business, for developing skills like astrology, a calender, a compass (which seems crazy without modern technology). A substantial part of the ground was dedicated to research and improve mais-seeds. Stealing and lying were the biggest sins. Therefore, animals were never used for the hard work. They did it themselves. After a 100 years living there, these Inca´s were attacked by the Spaniards. The elite fled into the jungle, taking with them the most precious belongings and the smartest people. The people were catched, the treasure called El Paititi is still somewhere in an unfindable place that ´white men´ can never find unless they have an Inca heart. They tried, of course, still do. It is said that a special tribe defends the treasure with their lifes and stranges things have happened to those who approached. The other part that´s left of Inca culture is 1 Inca who was taken to Europe as a slave. Some still hope for his return and with it, the return of the Inca empire..

Back on gringotrack

Finally, some news from Peru! I hear you wondering, what is she doing all the time? At this very moment I´m sitting in an internetcafé in Puno, next to Lago Titicaca. The nature is stunning… After a nice goodbye of the people I met in Cusco, I´m travelling southwards now. Ofcourse all backpackers take the same way, allthough we all think we´re quite original. This way even has a name: the Gringotrail which means trail of the white men. Tomorrowmorning I´m taking a boat for a group-daytrip to some beautiful isles, looking forward to that.

Well, let´s go through last week in big steps. I studied a lot of Spanish (even earned a certificate ´Espanol intermedio´), drank a lot of cafes cortados with Sarah (otherwise I would´ve never got that certificate), watched sunset from our balcony after the lessons, walked into a huge demonstration against the privatization of tourism in Peru (quite necessary protest!), went out for dinner and beers every night with my schoolfriends. Furthermore, I was sick last weekend. Not too good, because on Saturdaymorning I was expected to go to Maccu Picchu very early, around 5. Didn´t want to miss that… After a night of dreaming horrible things in Spanish language, I really ´dragged´ myself out of bed and went with Marie, an Austrian girl, to the train. We ended up in Aguas Calientes which is the startingpoint for Maccu Picchu.

Aguas Calientes is the noisiest place on earth. Our hotel lay between the busy railway/mainroad and a river that moves such great amounts of water that it sounds like a huge storm. Not much to do there, except for playing with kids and waterballoons! Soon it´ll be carnival in Peru and the Peruvian people practice this by throwing water to eachother. Some do it with bottles, other with buckets. The kids are really fond of the colourful waterballoons and I ended up in the girls-group, attacking the boys-side. With my long arms I was a big help, I think we won!

It was nice and warm in Aguas Calientes, about 25 degrees. I sat quite a while along the riverside in the sun, reading, writing and talking with some people I met in Cusco. One of them is a Suisse woman, backpacking through Latin America. The funny thing is she´s 51 years old. She decided some years ago she really wanted that and has such a good time. So mum, it´s never too late!
To be continued….

Viva el Peru

So hi everybody! It´s been a while, but after almost a year of not updating my travelblog I´m back in business. I´m not sure if you can call a three-week holiday ´travelling´. There are quite serious backpackers that have explicit ideas about what is the ´real´ travelling. Usually this has to do with exhausting, long trips in extreme circumstances that go together with smelly hair and a relaxt attitude. I´m not sure if I fit into that profile. Still I have the feeling this trip fits into my travelblog. So what are my plans? A combination of studying Spanish and travelling around south Peru. I just arrived two days ago in Cuzco, a sweet colonial town in the Sacred Valley, surrounded by green mountains and close to Maccu Picchu. This week I stay in a (really well atmosphered) studenthouse in the citycenter. Next Monday my lessons start. I write in English again so my non-Dutch friends can also follow my adventures. Hasta luego amigos!

Palermo Is Magnifico

In october I was in Palermo, Sicilia to visit my friend Wouter who studied Italian over there. A quick last word from costa rica, pacific coast again. I'm in Jaco, a beachplace, after visiting Samara. The finest beaches ever seen, huge waves that I barely survive during my swims. Travelled with guys and girl I already knew, met eachother in the bus in San Jose. Over here the atmosphere is really cool, a nice hostel where we made a huge bbq last night. I'm preparing for my back home a bit now, especially mentally for it could be tough.. I don't feel any urge to leave this 'sweet' life. So I'm pretending not to hear or see anything, and don't talk about it too much. .

From up here I wanna give you all the best wishes for 2007 and the nicest christmasdays. The surfing environment San Juan del Sur at the pacific coast of Nicaragua seems to connect well with this mentality. For some reason, the music I travels with me so these days on the pacific coast I listen a lot to American rockmusic. Rough, lyrical, dynamic, extreme, just like the beachlife here. I’m totally into the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

And yes, I tried surfing on Playa Madera, the ultimate surfingbeach in this area.. on this very day, the waves were 100 meters high and I saw the real good surfers disappearing into this wave-curls… incredible.. like I know it from videos. Next beside me. I can totally understand people make surfing their way of life. It’s mystical, looking over these little black puppets on the horizon, sitting on their surfboards, waiting for the waves in this silvergrey sparkling water. I could stay forever just watching this.

I’ve been about a week in San Juan del Sur, a nice fishingplace in a bay with the most beautiful beach reached in 40minutes by bus through the jungle. I met a lot of people here that I already knew, so that gave my stay a big ‘cosy’ idea. Have been there on the beach quite a while, for it was the first time I saw the Ocean Pacific in real... amazing, I loved it here.

With two friends from the US, Shawn and Brent, I stayed a night on Playa Madera, the beach next to San Juan del Sur. Quite an adventure. We saw the sunset, collected wood, made a fire to keep the bugs away, ate fruit and cookies, heated cans on the fire, did some nice storytelling – just the way it should be. While being asleep, it started to rain, so we had to pack and hide under the rocks. Later it got dry and I suddenly woke up at four, seeing an amazingly clear sky with all the stars you can dream off, hearing the fire behind and the sea in front off me.

At the moment I write this, I’m still at the pacific coast but then in Costa Rica, and will stay here this week, heading more southwards tomorrow already towards Jaco and Manuel Antonia.

La Luna Llena de Nicaragua

New stories, new stories! She works at this very moment and I explore the town and shoppingmalls :) Quite fun to be in ´normal´ shops after some months. It´s really obvious for me that I´m in a better developed, richer environment now, for the western-classy clothes people wear, the enormous amounts of christmaslights and the wellfunctioning internet.

Let me tell you about the first place I visited in Nicaragua after my delightful weekend in Antigua, which was Granada (pic at right, you see they build the christmas tree at the left, a happening that gathered the whole town for two days in the central parque). I was quite happy to be there after a two day busride through El Salvador and Honduras, although I had good fun with some people there. It´s funny how it works travelling alone, cause you never really are. On the one hand, there are the other backpackers with who you get in contact very easily because you have the same interests and problems (exchanging money at the border, find a good place to sleep, a safe bus etc etc), on the other hand you have the native people who usually are quite interested in who you are and where you´re from and with whom I can practice Spanish conversation. So, after talking two days I was quite exhausted ;)

Granada is a beautiful colonial town, with a nice church and processions of the a statue of the virgen Mary every night (a ´costum´ carried out by the churches in town), quite a big happening with fireworks and music. Baby´s, pubers, mothers, grandfathers with walkingsticks, the whole family is present. Fireworks are all around every place I visit and OH the noice it makes. People would laugh very loudly about tvspots like ¨Je bent een rund als je met vuurwerk stunt¨ because you can get it as easy as candybars and do anything you want with it. I visited a museum, walked around and had fun with other travellers in the hostel, watched somes movies. Quite relaxed.. So it was time for a bit of workout.. that I found on Isla de Ometepe, a gorgeous wild natural island in the Lake of Nicaragua, consisting of two vulcanos. In Hacienda Merida, the hostel, I found a nice bunch of people that I did a mountainbike tour with, hiked the vulcano, played cards with and watched la Luna Llena at the dock on the lakeside. These sporty things were quite challenging for me. That´s got probably to do with the fact that we started too late mountainbiking to a spring, so we had to return in the dark. There´s hardly any light on the island, and the track was only uphill-downhill ´on the rocks´.. Fortunately the fireflies led the way but could not prevend some crashes with blooded knees. As for the vulcano-hike (which was supposed to be ´good fun´, thanx Brent and Shawn): 9 hours of climbing, crawling through the mud, over and under trees (see green pic left), 7 degrees, rainy, no view and an immensely steep descend to the foggy craterlake - it was only later that I found out people died here - with TOO SMALL shoes... is not really my thing.. Ofcourse I was very proud I climbed this 1500 m steep high vulcano (see pic right down). And I didn´t know how soon I´d pack my backpack to head towards San Juan del Sur, at the south of Nicaragua.

Via Coban back to Antigua

HI there! It´s been a while but ooh I´ve been so busy these weeks. Had good fun, saw a lot of nature and ended up at the beach South-Nicaragua in the rustic fishingplace San Juan del Sur. Tomorrow I´m heading southwards to Costa Rica.

After Livingston, I went to Coban in the middle of Guatemala. The most beautiful springs on earth in Semuc Champey, are next to this place. We spent a day there exploring the area, swimming and climbing. In Coban we met a nice man who just started a hostel over there, we had such a good time with his friendly family and could practice lots of Spanish. The strange thing was, that for unknown circumstances the temperature went down to about 1 degree Celcius! A big problem for many people, especially for the ones that are used to sleep on the streets. As you can see on the picture we had to use our bed-poncho to have a bit of a warm breakfastmoment.

Stefany´s friends (pic: me with the ´homemade´ orange), very comfortable and very nice, here I met some ´Dutchies´ that live in the same street, inviting us for dinner, movies and rides to town. My last night with Stefany was also here because she had to go to San Jose where her job at an educationalAfter that we spent a weekend close to Antigua in the house of radiostation was waiting. And ofcourse, I had to move on as well to Nicaragua. More about that later!

The Stars in Tikal

The experience I´ve been wanting to share with you is my visit to Tikal, the ancient Maya site in the dense jungle of North Guatemala. In many ways a special experience, and not only for the fascinating history of the Mayas or the starry night in a hammock.

When we arrived at 6 in the evening, it turned out that the Park Tikal was closed for visitors. The reason? All the presidents of Central America were there at that moment, making lots of noice with their big helicopters and leaving no space for others (seems logical concerning the fact that Tikal sizes only 576 km2). For Stefany and me that wasn´t a problem, cause we would stay overnight to see sunrise at Tikal the next morning. So we took our time to explore the jungle, meet many mosquitos and admire the ´grotesk´ arrival of the presidents. At 21h ´en punto´ the ligths went out in our hotel and with some others we climbed up a roof to watch the stars and drink a beer. The howling monkeys, the snoring insects, the fireflies leaving fluorescent traces made it a real jungle experience. Incredible!

At 4 o clock in the morning we jumped out (ahum...) our hammocks, ready for sunrise. Our enthusiasm was only a little bit tempered by the fact that Stefany left her contact-lenses inside the locked up hotel. The attempt to break in didn´t work so imagine me walking through the jungle, while it´s raining, while it´s VERY dark, with a girl hanging on my arm that can´t see a bit of all the impressive things we pass by... Around 6 it got lighter fortunately and there we sat, on top of a 65 meter-high-pyramid, watching sunrise in a red-black sky above the Guatemalan rainforest with it´s majestic Maya-temples. The rain started again, making the whole even more absurd, eery, cool, I cannot find the word. (Stefie still didn´t have her contact-lenses so we made an extra hour of walking back to the hotel in the pooring rain, remember the pic?)

Okay, are you still tuned? I want to keep this weblog short, but it doesn´t work this time. Don´t sayI didn´t warn you! There we go then. The Mayan civilization is the oldest after the Greeks and the Egypts. The buildings at Tikal have been built between 4 BC and the 850 AD by the population of the Mayas in Tikal (100-200.000 people). This highly civilized culture was at its peak between 200 and 850 AD. After it, they mysteriously abandoned Tikal. According to our guide Giovanni, this had to do with environmental issues. Many dry years, infertile ground afters years of exploiting the soil for agriculture made the Mayan´s desperately sacrificing more and more people to their gods in trade for rain and life. They even sacrificed the king, but even that didn´t help.

From Tikal and other Maya'cities in the area, Mayas spread over the country and divided up in many submayan cultures with all their own practices, symbols and languages (that are in fact so different that different Maya'villages right now don´t understand eachother when not speaking Spanish!) It´s only after the arrival of the Spanish they start to make their famous clothing-handcraft. The name Maya itself also comes from the Spanish, who were answered the word ´Mayap´- ¨I don´t understand¨ - by these indigen habitants of Guatemala, Nicaragua, Belize and Honduras. Later they mixed up with Aztecs and other native inhabitants of Central America. The Ladino´s in Guatemala are a mixture of Spanish and Maya´s, having a higher social status than the generally poor, struggling, non employed Maya´s. This is a big inequality in Guatemala.

As mentioned, the Mayas sacrificed people and had more crual practices, like killing a non maya by surrounding him with a huge group, throwing spears. Or the ´meso america ball game´, a combination of football and basketball, where not the looser but the star, the winner was murederd by sacrifice. They only wanted to give the best they had to their gods, so it makes sense doesn´t it?

Interesting is the theory of guide Giovanni about the origin of the May´s. According to him, they come from Asia. Similarities in looks on the outside but there´s more. The tailbone of both groups seem to have a bluegreen spot just above it. Furthermore the pyramids in for instance Cambodja look very much alike the Mayan pyramids. Before the Mayans came in central america there was lots of natural problems in asia like earthquakes, storms etc. So they went to tranquil central america where non of the old Maya ruins were ever violated by nature.

History is so simple.

Still alive in Livingston

Hello! Greetings from Livingston, West Guatemala at the Carribean coast, only to be reached by taking a boat over the Rio Dulce. A quiet village where in earlier days the slaves from Africa arrived which resulted in a very colourful town of Garifuna´s, Maya´s and ladino´s. The Garifuna´s are a minority in Guatemala, for the population consists mainly of Maya´s and Ladino´s - a mix of Maya´s and Spanish people. The Rastafari is all around in Livingston.. relaxed atmosphere, music everywhere, streetlife till late at night. We were in a Garifunabar and enjoyed a nice show with african girls dancing, one of them asked me to join.. so I did.. was very funny! and scary :)

And what I loved very much... to see the sea! What´s really too bad though, is that the the beaches are not very beautiful. They´re small and there´s lots of trash, especially flipflops and bottles and other plastic rubbish (everything that floats). It seems the water is rising, so the beaches get smaller. Furthermore most countries at the Carribean don´t have well functioning ´trash management´, so it keeps piling up especially because the populations are growing rapidly. We made a nice walk of about 5 hours yesterday to waterfalls where we swam. ´We´ are my travelcompanion
Stefanie, Ana from the US and two Spanish guys Jordi and Jose. We spoke lots of Spanish the last days for the guys don´t speak English, I´m getting more and more comfortable with it. We met them at a ecological (VERY basic..) hostel at Rio Dulce, in the middle of the jungle where we have been kayaking, walking, swimming and visiting a developmental schoolproject. The picture at the right is in the middle of the jungle, while Stefany and I are soaking wet from head to toe.. Sunrise at Tikal was great and we experienced the rainforest in its true ´sense´.. later more about this. Meanwhile, we could not see further than 10 meters because it was so cloudy. It smelled like a bige fireplace. We could only HEAR our guide shouting ´this way, this way´ and not see him. It was appr. 50 degrees and we saw the boiling lava under our shoes - which nearly melted. Can you imagine it felt like being in a Lord of the Rings-kind of movie?

Of course, at the end we threw in ´our precious´ and saved the world! In about two hours we go to Tikal, one of the most impressive Maya-ruinsites in the world. Don´t be afraid, I won´t change to Spanish already.. even if I wanted to.. My Spanish improves by the day but I have to work hard for it. The combination of this language course in the morning with Salsa-classes in the afternoon is very good. Mind and body are very satisfied :)

LAST WEEKEND I went to Lago Atitlan with some people I met here. San Pedro was the place were we found a hotel. This is some sort of old hippie-place with lots of places to go out and tjill.. so we did. This place is like Antigua situated between volcanos, but much more isolated from the rest of the world. The best way to get there is by boat and it´s clear that the western people that live there (a minority still) don´t have much to do but smoking pot, drinking beers and juggling with fire ,) We stayed in a nice hostel with great view (see the pic) and swam in the lake. Like Antigua and I guess much more places in Guatemala the people here are very ´happy´ and colourful religious, from Saturday to Sunday we heared them sing in one of the many churches. Texts like the one you see on the picture (Jesus is the Lord) are very common here.

LIFE IN ANTIGUA is good. It´s very nice to have the chance to live and learn with them - Mayas and only Spanish-speaking girls. On the picture you see we gave them a map of the world. Their first question was ´what´s the blue?´. They´re very mature although they´re younger than most of us, I think mainly because they have lots of responsibilities for their family. I´ve been invited to a ´real´ Maya-wedding by a friend of them, but unfortunately I´ll be away by then. Christi is very sweet, a few minutes ago she came to me and gave me a little bag with Guatemaltecan Worriedolls for good luck.

Usually I have some breakfast on the roof in the sun and do my last homework. But I guess, the pictures also speak for themselves. By the way, if you click ON a picture, it gets bigger, maybe you´ll spot some interesting details. The rose you see at the left is at ground zero. Was very impressive actually. My thinking was Off all the cities in the world, New York must be the most tolerant one. And see what happened there. Furthermore, you see the brooklyn Bridge.. hiphop, jazz, music.. Also a painting I saw at the MoMa museum, the Museum of Modern Arts.. Macke (Hope), Monet, Picasso, Kirchner, Mondriaan, Warhol.. its all there, incredible to see that finally!! I went to Chinatown, where there was a streetfair (the photo with the balloons) and I had several chats and noodles. There{s the neighbourhood-discussionpic about Beirut and Israel, very interesting to read what they say. Theres Carnegie Hall where I went in for free... to see a piano recital of a famous american composer (??) Leon Fleisher. And of course my mom and Josien came for a couple of days to join me and! We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria hotel, thanks to Baukejan en Gerlinde. I had a tour in the United Nations building as well, very impressive (The Freedom of Expression-pic). Furthermore I met friends of Nynke´s. Monika and Emon, they took me out for dinner with other friends, we went out as well to a real non-smoking Manhattan-cafe so I got a little impression of New York´s nightlife. Then there was Brooklyn, Soho, Levi´s trousers for 35 dollars and other important things :)

As a whole I think New York is so friendly. At first a got a little scared because the moment I put my foot out of the hostel for the first time, a women came over, asking : are you from Holland? You look SO European!!´. But then I noticed people really laugh to eachother and step aside for eachother on the sidewalk. IN the restaurant there´s free water and bread. Waitresses that are willing to serve you. SO not Amsterdam :) Then there´s the intercultural thing happening everywhere and it doesn´t seem to be a problem or a reason for anxiety. Can´t forget the little food-bar with american music, kosher meat and halal sausages. The black busdrivers that help old posh ladies into their bus and giving all the information about the traffic you want. Funny. Ofcourse I´ve only been there for a short time but still, the atmosphere seemed friendly and tolerant.

So far my New York Tales letting out a lot of stories ofcourse but I guess if I write more it really gets too weary. It's late and my Spanish class is already at eight tomorrow morning. So good night!

¡Hola Guatemala!

Antigua/Guatemala - Hiii everybody, just a quick word to let you know everything is okay up here! I´ve been in New York for a week and that was awesome.. Right now I´m in Antigua, a nice small kolonial town in Guatemala. I wondered if everything would work out, but it did, more than I expected. I was picked up at the airport in Guatemala City by the driver of the Spanish School I´m in (he had a paper in his hand with ´JANTINE VANT´ in huge green capitals, couldn´t miss that :))

I stay in a studenthouse with eight others from us, canada, holland, sweden and even liechtenstein. Aged all between 23 and 30... I was a bit afraid I would be an old woman here but that´s no problem. I helped Ana, the housekeeper, with dinner (Tina-dinner) and we ate with the whole group. Ana is 21 and has got 11 brothers and sisters. It turned out that yesterday everybody went out. It was ladiesnight - cuba libres for 20 cts.... (reminds me of Zwolle..) Luckily I heard this is not a daily habit, cause I´m here for other purposes right?! My room... ah well you can see it on the pictures, I think about organizing salsaclasses or futbol in there...

This place Antigua is sooo sweet, it looks like a fairytale, the little streets, the cobbledstones, the coloured houses, nature around it. But ofcourse it´s not. Most of the people are really poor. That´s something you have to realize when you´re in this kind of ´comfortable school-studenthouse environment´.

Right now I´m going out to find a lunch somewhere. By the way, my Spanish is quite allright, I didn´t know it was still there!

Groetjuuus Jantine
